Scrubs placed a big emphasis on the personal relationships between all of the characters, but the friendship between J.D. and Turk was definitely the main basis for many of the show’s best jokes. Although this formula is pretty standard for a sitcom, it never felt old or rushed when it was delivered by the cast of Scrubs. One of the best parts of the show, though, was when the comedy was put on hold for a few minutes. The beastly atrocity committed in a moving bus in Delhi just provided for the immediate cause of the present outcry all over India on the safety of the female gender. Sadly the victim has passed away but our everyday festivals shall still go on. Who cares? We sit cosily in air-conditioned rooms, legs over each other, sip hot coffee and complain that India is dying. Each one of us. And there, for every minute we sleep, people wail all over somewhere.

We are asking for justice to the victims of rape all over the country; we ask for death, castration, etc. But perhaps this is just not enough. If the government rules with the iron hand, the frequency of rapes can be mitigated but the mindset shall still prevail. Shall we do enough by Bobbitisation, or chemical castration? Or by public lynching? Can it help in the long run? But we proceed to big goals with small steps; at least some steps must be taken before we can really think ‘trying to change the minds’ is really applicable to people of this nation.

Many believe in God because He had answered their prayers somehow. We are egoistic; we are selfish enough to shut our eyes, ears to the world around us. Every day a rape is hitting the front page and we are squirming in disgust or hatred. We might even seek a way out of all these by leaving our country and loving life abroad.

I call it flight.

Flight from the terrible eyes which sights cannot stand; flight from the crying child and dying mother being gang-raped; flight from your motherland.

Let them flee. But we have the thousands whom we are left with. We have the potential.

Yet there are many of us helpless, waiting for a chance. The youth has joined candle march protests in respective areas, demanding more stringent measures from the government. And those of still waiting, are perhaps not willing enough.

Our great actors and celebrities cannot be seen when it’s a time of crisis. Tweets? Oh please! Cannot they use their immense fan following in gathering huge crowds? Even without theirs, we had such an uprising in the April of 2011. We could have gone a lot further with their help. It’s just not done. Yes, it is a reality ‘film festival’; but then where are the glitterati with full regalia?

My object here is not to bring out the brutality outside our painted rooms, but to gather up force silently. I know my words shall be fruitless to most reading, but at least they can inspire some one individual.

And at the bottom of everything, lies the system of education, the quality of education given by the family and the corruption of the mind. There’s not much time left. But it’s enough to search for some success, lest we should never reach an end.

The History

This should be the sort of news that would push a cricket-crazy nation like India into depression (overstatement, but I am not that far off here!), but what I hear from everyone who has something to say (and that’s literally everyone in India) is that this is some sort of good news and good riddance. Instead of celebrating and appreciating what Sachin has done for cricket in India, we are complaining that he should have retired earlier.

Frankly, I am baffled at the sentiment. I must admit I was expecting this, but the sheer volume and negativeness around the issue is sad. Yes, people who think Sachin should have retired earlier have valid arguments and there is nothing wrong with that. However, being objective about anything is clearly not an Indian trait (look at the reaction to the girls on Facebook for their post during the Bal Thackeray incident, or the current protests for the rape of an innocent girl). Instead of passing judgment on what a superhuman should be doing or should have done, we should be celebrating and thanking him for his services and dedication.

The more I think about why Indians are reacting in this manner, the more I get concerned about the general psyche of the Indian diaspora. Are people directing their hate towards Sachin just because they genuinely do not like him (highly unlikely) or is there a deeper problem at play? I feel we have somehow turned into a society that is so competitive and pessimistic that we can’t appreciate someone else’s achievement without somehow bringing them down, so that we can feel better about ourselves and our lack of similar achievements.

Now my theory isn’t based on just the Sachin incident, but there are hundreds of other such examples that I see online that it is hard to ignore this as just a small percentage of people who are like that. Although my conclusions are drawn from a very unscientific methods, but go look for yourself, open any news portal with a comments section and read some of the comments in there, be it Narendra Modi’s victory in Gujarat, or the numerous exposes from the Aam Aadmi Party courtesy Arvind Kejriwal, FDI in retail. And the funny thing is people making comments on such articles often start going at each other.

Coming back to the issue of negativity, it’s not just the general public; this negativity is being displayed even by journalists, blog writers etc, and often times their articles are based on factually incorrect data, or they simply ignore the facts and make opinion sound like fact! Before this article turns into a rant about what’s wrong with our country, let me come back to Sachin. This man is the greatest cricketer who ever lived (No, Don Bradman is not better, he is a myth and from what little research I have done he was not as good as people make him to be. In fact his statement that Sachin looked like him while batting is nonsense; his style of batting was completely different from Sachin’s. And you do not have to take my word for it, go and take a look at any of the videos available online.) And yet we fail to as a country stand up and give the little master his due. He deserves to be treated like a god and instead we challenge his very existence. He is the only reason Indian cricket survived the match fixing scandal, he had his best years when Indian cricket was having its worst, he gave us a belief that as long as Sachin was there we could win any match. He made this country come to a standstill with his batting and inspired the current crop of superstars!

We should be giving him a standing ovation and wishing him the best for the future. You are free to dislike and even hate this humble, modest man, but you should not rain on his parade so that you can have a bright moment in your sad existence. If you don’t have anything nice to say about Sachin, then don’t say anything. It’s simple, he is not hurting you by retiring, in fact he is granting you your wish, all you need to do in return is tip your hat and say good-bye and thank you.
